Fuente y Fuente Opus X Review
By Staff of i Cigars
Rare 90 Rating
(Highest Rating for any Cigar made outside of Cuba)
The Fuente y Fuente Opus X line of Premium Hand Rolled Cigars are a Premium Dominican Republic Product.
For cigar smokers that cannot get real Cuban cigars, this is the top end of the Cigar World.
While many give it higher ratings than a 90, I do not give any cigar from outside of Cuba a higher rating than 90. So this is as high as I will ever rate any cigar that is not 100% Cuban.
However, it is as good as it gets in the cigar world, unless you can find a real Cuban.
While many claim you can’t tell the difference between a Real Cuban and the Finest Cigars now from the Dominican Republic and even Nicaragua, the fact is I’ve been smoking cigars for over 40 years now and to my palate, NOTHING TASTES LIKE A REAL CUBAN CIGAR and in the world of Cuban Cigars, my palate has a very narrow range of what I view to be CIGAR PERFECTION (primarily the Cuban Montecristo #2).
The well oiled leaf of the Opus X line showed the world that great leafs could be grown in the Dominican Republic, since before Opus X, premium DR and Nicaraguan lines dared to not use a DR Leaf.
The best rollers in the Fuente factory are chosen to roll these beauties so the construction is as good as it gets.
The burn is perfect and the draw is perfect. They are a heavier smoke than most DR products but they are a great smoke, the best there is until you can find an elite Cuban Cigar, then the flavors that dominate Cubans are no match for the much blander cigars that didn’t soak up the rare Cuban soil that gives elite Cuban Cigars that special flavor.
While some reviewers claim they can taste hints of chocolate or cinnamon, etc, in cigars from outside Cuba, my palate does not taste these flavors unless they are a real Cuban Cigar. I honestly believe the soil in Cuba is much different than the Dominican and Nicaragua where Tobacco farming is a post Castro industry. Before Castro tobacco was grown for cigars in Cuba.
For hundreds of years natural pesticides have been used that must have included cinnamon to give the soil of Cuban its unique makeup of material. You may find hints of chocolate throughout other regions since Cocoa was native to the Americas and was all over the islands and central and south America for ages, but it is my opinion the soil of Cuba has had hundreds of years of pre-chemical pesticide attempts to control insects and that is part of the unique aspects of Cuban soil.
While my palate has never even tasted a natural hint of Chocolate in any cigar from tobacco outside of Cuban cigars, some claim to taste it in Dominican or Nicaraguan products, I don’t.
Yet the smoke is SMOOTH and yet STRONG enough for a heavy Maduro lover like me to enjoy on this beauty.Fuente y Fuente Opus X
This is a picture of my New Years tradition, a nice snifter of Gran Marnier Cognac and a perfect Opus X Cigar. If you want to try something different, dip the cut end of the cigar into Gran Marnier to slightly wet the end and then your draw is a heavenly event.

Get a box of these beauties and put them in the back of your humidor, they will be much sought after in the future, they are that good.
